The Stainless Steel Composite Panel is a bimetal formed by composite rolling of multiple layers (stainless steel) and base layers (carbon steel, low alloy steel, etc.), the corrosion resistance is guaranteed by the multiple layers, and the strength is mainly obtained by the base layer, thus saving a large amount of stainless steel and having good economic value. Stainless steel composite panel has been widely used in the petrochemical industry, food industry and other fields due to its good comprehensive performance and superior price. Stainless steel composite panel welding is different from stainless steel, carbon steel or low alloy steel, and has its own characteristics and difficulties.

Welding characteristics of stainless steel composite panel:

From the design point of view, the base layer of the stainless steel composite panel is mainly to ensure the strength, the clad layer is mainly to ensure its corrosion resistance, and the intermediate added transition layer is only required by the welding process. In order to ensure that the composite steel panel does not lose its original comprehensive properties, it is necessary to weld the base layer and the composite layer separately. In addition to the welding of the base layer and multiple layers, there is also the problem of welding of the transition layer, which is the main characteristic of stainless steel composite panel welding. For the problems between multi-layer weld and base weld, and for the junction between multi-layer weld and base metal, the transitional weld should be adopted. The welding of the transition layer between the base layer and the multiple layers is the key to the welding of stainless steel composite panel.

After the welding of the base layer is completed and before the welding of the transition layer and the multiple layers, the base layer shall generally be inspected by radiographic inspection. If any defect exceeding the standard is found, repair shall be carried out immediately. After the repair is completed and passes the radiographic inspection, the surface of the base weld seam on the multi-layer side shall be polished and levelled. Generally, a penetrant inspection shall be carried out. After passing the penetrant inspection, the transition layer and the multi-layer shall be welded. After the welding of the transition layer and multi-layer is completed, penetrant flaw detection shall generally be carried out.
